The major harvest festival of India Sankranti was celebrated on 14th January 2019 in our school. The children of nursery came to school dressed up in traditional dress representing different states of our country which celebrate this festival. Teacher while explaining the importance of this festival informed children that on this very day the farmers worship Sun god and thank god for good crop. This festival teaches us to be thankful to nature for providing us with all the necessary things that help us grow and stay healthy. Different states have different names for this festival – . People from Maharashtra celebrate it as Makar Sankranti, while in Gujarat it is Uttarayan , Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh people call it Sankranti, Tamil Nadu has pongal, West Bengal people call it as Poisha Sangranti  and Assam celebrates it as Bihu. Teacher explained that though this festival has different names across states, but its core is thanking God for good harvest. This festival is observed to mark the movement of change in Sun which gives us change in the climate. Winter season makes way for spring season and days get longer. Teacher explained that as the weather changes food habits should also change. That is why this festival is important. To keep ourselves  healthy we should eat food like jaggery, sugarcane,  rice, moong dal etc. The festival mood was enhanced in our school by singing songs and doing several art and craft activities in the classroom. The children of nursery and LKG made kites and children of UKG did freehand drawing.
