Gudi Padwa marks the New Year for Maharashtrians as per the Hindu Calender. It falls on the first day of Chaitra. It is celebrated with a lot of fanfare and pomp among the Maharashtrian families. The day begins with an oil bath followed by raising the Gudi (a bright colorful silk scarf-like cloth tied at the top of a long bamboo; decorated with neem and mango leaves along with a garland of flowers. This arrangement is capped with a silver, bronze or copper pot). This is also a very auspicious day for the Sindhi community which celebrates the birth of Sindhi patron Saint Jhulelal as New Year’s – Cheti Chand. Ugadi, New Year’s Day for the people of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana states in India is also observed on the first day of the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra.

NKG celebrated the festival in the assembly. Teacher first recapitulated the 12 months of English calendar and then explained that as per Hindu calendar, few states observe New Year from Chaitra month. Hosting of flag (Gudi) was also done. Children from UKG A came dressed in traditional attire and helped teacher in narrating the story.
